TWU held a social dialogue meeting on occupational health and safety (OHS) policies in Kumasi on April 28th, 2023

The Timber and Woodworkers Union(TWU) held a social dialogue meeting on occupational health and safety (OHS) policies in Kumasi on April 28th, 2023. The meeting brought together representatives from the TWU, government officials, employers, and workers to discuss ways to improve OHS policies and practices in the Wood and Forestry Sector.

 

The meeting began with an opening address from the Chairperson of the Tiber and Woodworkers Union Sister Georgina Smedley, who emphasized the importance of OHS in the Wood and Forestry Sector and the need for collaboration among stakeholders to improve working conditions for Timber and Wood workers. This was followed by a series of presentations from OHS experts and government officials, who shared insights and best practices on OHS policies and regulations.


The main focus of the meeting was on identifying gaps and challenges in current OHS policies and practices in the Wood and Forestry Sector, and developing strategies to address them. Participants discussed issues such as inadequate training and equipment for workers, poor working conditions, and the need for stronger enforcement of OHS regulations.

 

The meeting concluded with a set of recommendations and action points for improving OHS policies and practices in the Wood and Forestry Sector. These included the need for increased training and awareness-raising among workers and employers, the development of stronger OHS regulations, and the establishment of an OHS monitoring and reporting system.
